Computer Clubs in Thailand: Rules, Licenses, and Risks

Computer clubs and esports arenas remain a popular business in Thailand. Demand comes from both locals and tourists. However, legal operation is only possible if the established legal requirements are met.

Licenses

To open a club, a license from the Ministry of Culture is required. It is issued for five years.
The standard business structure is a Thai Limited Company. A foreign director is possible, but must obtain a work permit. For a Work Permit, a certain registered capital is required, as well as the employment of four Thai staff members.

Age Restrictions

  • Children under 15 are allowed only until 8:00 p.m. (from 2:00 p.m. on weekdays).
  • Teenagers aged 15 to 17 may stay until 10:00 p.m.
  • From 10:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m., clubs are accessible only to adults (18+).
Violation of age-related rules may result in fines and even revocation of the license.

Premises Requirements

The club must be open to public view: transparent doors or windows are mandatory. Surveillance cameras must be installed, fire extinguishers provided, ventilation ensured, and a separate restroom available. Closed booths are prohibited. Owners are required to keep internet logs for 90 days.

Tournaments

No separate license is required to organize tournaments. The key condition is the absence of betting or other gambling elements. For large-scale events, it is recommended to notify local authorities and the police. Tournaments involving minors may only be held during permitted hours.

Penalties

Operating without a license is subject to heavy fines, which increase for each day of violation. Selling food without authorization leads to fines and kitchen closure. Employing foreigners without a Work Permit may result in fines for the company and deportation of the employee.
Summary: Computer clubs in Thailand require strict compliance with licensing, age rules, and facility standards. With proper preparation and legal support, this sector can be a profitable and sustainable business.
